Three home security system myths debunked

Too complicated and too expensive – unfortunately this is the first thought that pops into many people’s mind when it comes to home security systems. And to some extent, it’s true; traditional home security systems involved lots of wires, programming and a hefty investment of cash. Contemporary home security systems, on the other hand, are a completely different beast. In today’s post, we want to set the record straight about modern home security systems and put some of these old myths to bed.

Myth #1: Home security systems are difficult to install.

FALSE.

Traditionally, home security systems relied on complex wiring to transfer information from various components back to the control panel. And to supply all devices in the system (such as motion detectors, control panel, security cameras and sirens) with power.

These days, many modern home security systems are battery powered and utilise wireless technologies, such as WiFi, Bluetooth or Zigbee, to communicate actions or events back to the main control panel. Wireless systems have made installation far easier, for both professionals and home DIY enthusiasts.

The breadth of wireless solutions available continues to increase every day, with solutions available to meet a variety of needs and budgets. From a simple Ring doorbell to an advanced Dahua CCTV kit, there’s a plethora of options for consumers to choose from.

Myth #2: Home security systems are expensive.

FALSE.

Advances in manufacturing technologies has helped to reduce the cost of components, and in turn, the cost of home security systems. But for many consumers, it’s been the ongoing cost of external monitoring that has turned them off from investing in a home security system. Thankfully, many contemporary home security systems allow you to monitor (and in some cases, program) from your smartphone via an app – effectively eliminating the need (and cost!) of external monitoring.

Myth #3: Home security systems are confusing to program and monitor.

FALSE.

Many home security systems can now be programmed and monitored using your smartphone via an app. For example, leading Italian alarm manufacturer, AMC Alarms, developed the intuitive AMC Manager App for use with their systems. Compatible with both iOS and Android, the AMC Manager App can be used to program your alarm system and monitor events (such as intrusion) in real time thanks to push-notifications sent directly to your phone. Other brands that also offer app integration include Ring and Dahua.
