Improve your garage security with these tips

Garage doors are not only the weak point of your garage, but it can also shelter the thief once they are inside. To a casual passer-by, an open garage with a van pulled up doesn’t look out of place. This means that they can take their time in choosing items to steal. So what can you do to minimise the chances of theft occurring in your garage? Read on for our top tips on getting your garage security in top shape.

Always lock your garage

Locking your garage door should be second nature, like locking your front door. But, if you’re one of the thousands who leave the garage door unlocked or open, then you need a garage door remote. It means you don’t need to get out of your car to open and close your garage door each time.

What about when you leave for weekend getaways or an overseas holiday? Consider adding a floor anchor. It gives the garage door lock that extra security as it's another barrier the thief has to work through.

Good garage security isn't limited to the garage door. Think about the door that connects your home to the garage. You should treat this entry door the same as you do with your front door. The door should be strong and secure, made from solid wood or reinforced steel. With the right door lock, it strengthens the security to your door. Plus it adds another barrier that the thief has to break to get inside. But, don’t forget to keep it locked at all times, whether you’re at home or not.

Cover up the windows

If your garage has windows, get them covered. The aim is to minimise opportunities the thief has to scout out your belongings. Because, if they can’s see inside, they’ll be less motivated to break in. So, either fit frosted glass panes or cover them up (from the inside) with cardboard or thick fabric. Remember, it doesn’t have to be elaborate, it needs to obscure the view from the outside.

Garage remote

Leaving your garage remote in your car is a huge no-no. Why? By leaving the garage door remote in an accessible place, aka the car, it allows the thief to make a quick getaway. It's also important to not leave your remote in the car when there are many entries into the garage, such as back doors and windows. So if you’re terrible at remembering to take it out of the car every time, opt for a keychain garage remote instead. If you’re not sure how to find the right one for you, we have you covered with this guide.

There are times when having a garage remote is not enough, we still forget to close the garage door. If you fall into this category, then no fancy garage remote will help. Instead grab yourself a smart garage door controller, like this one from Garadget. It will let you know when the garage door is open or closed. But the best feature is it lets you close the garage door from your phone, even if you are already a few blocks away.

Lighting

Lighting is a must for all garages and driveways. This restricts the thief from using the cover of darkness in making their way to your garage. So opt for a motion-activated light for the driveway. Make sure that this lights up the whole garage door as well. Lighting inside the garage is as important, so make sure to choose bright lightbulbs. The lights can switch on each time the garage door is opened or you can choose to have a light switch instead.
